Liver cirrhosis is a life-threatening problem; a considerable proportion of patients with liver cirrhosis progress to liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. Current medical therapy for liver cirrhosis is performed for the purpose of improving liver function. An effective treatment for liver fibrosis has not been developed; therefore, establishment of a breakthrough therapy with sufficient efficacy and safety is desired.
